The Call: A New Park That Needed a Building to Welcome and Operate Simultaneously

Quarry Trails was a newly developed park that needed its first permanent facility: a ranger station. But this was not a simple building. It needed to serve three distinct functions under one roof. Visitors needed public restrooms and a welcoming space that would be the first indoor experience of the park. Staff needed offices. Maintenance needed secure storage and work facilities. The challenge was designing a single structure where the public areas feel open and inviting while the operational areas remain secured and separate, without either function compromising the other.

Designing the Separation Between Welcome and Operations

A multi-function park building serves audiences with competing needs. Visitors want warmth and accessibility. Staff want functionality and direct access. Maintenance wants security. A design that blurs these boundaries creates problems for everyone. The park needed a partner who could design the separation clearly enough that each function works independently while sharing a single structure seamlessly. They chose Triad.

The Decisions That Made Three Functions Work Under One Roof

The ranger station was designed with a clear separation between public and operational areas. The public side includes restrooms and a welcome center that can be open to visitors, even when the office and maintenance areas are secured. Visitors experience a welcoming front door without ever encountering the operational side of the building.

The office and maintenance areas have their own secured access. Staff can reach their spaces directly without passing through public areas. Equipment and maintenance operations are protected. The design supports the daily workflows of the people who run the park without the public-facing functions getting in the way.

The public-facing portion of the building was designed to set the tone for the newly developed park. As one of the first structures visitors encounter, the ranger station creates a positive first impression that matches the quality of the park. The budget was maximized across all three functions, bidder accountability was maintained, and the project was delivered on schedule for the park’s opening.

A Ranger Station That Welcomes and Operates Equally Well

The Quarry Trails Ranger Station serves three functions under one roof without any of them compromising the others. Visitors are welcomed with public restrooms and a front-door experience that sets the tone for the park. Staff have functional offices with direct, secured access. Maintenance has secure storage and work facilities. The separation is clear enough that each function operates independently while sharing a single, cohesive structure. The budget was maximized, the schedule was met, and the first building visitors encounter at Quarry Trails establishes the quality and character of the park.

Working with a public sector agency isn't always designing high profile projects, but we value Triad's flexible approach and dedication to the design and construction management process. We look forward to working with [Triad] in the future.
