A Building as Unique as the Ecosystem in which it Lived

Cedar Bog Nature Preserve located in Urbana, Ohio is owned by the state of Ohio. The bog is considered Ohio’s premier natural area and is nationally renowned for its plant diversity. Operators Ohio History Connection and Cedar Bog Association wanted to create an onsite learning center for visitors to learn about the ecosystem and how to protect it. But they wanted a building that would create minimal impact on the preserve’s fen ecosystem, so they looked to Triad for help.

Commitment to Community

Our team members are invested in the communities where we work, and we believe that the client mission is the unwavering priority. So, we were eager to immerse ourselves and collaborate to incorporate sustainable systems into the project.

We accomplished this by developing an open-loop geothermal system that is uniquely combined with an onsite wastewater system. Water is pumped from the site and split into a geothermal heat sink and a potable system. Solids are separated in a septic tank and the wastewater is pumped to an onsite wastewater area where it is treated through the use of plants. The geothermal discharge is pumped into the wastewater area to provide the required water to facilitate plant growth. Water is pumped from the site, used in the building, and returned to the site cleaner than when it was harvested.

The biggest selling point to me is that everything you design is unique. It doesn’t scream ‘TRIAD designed me!’ The other firms have that ‘look.’ You separate yourselves from that. Cedar Bog needed a design that screamed ‘Cedar Bog!’ and you recognized that. Thank you!

Service and Stewardship

Our team thrives on authentic engagements. We listen to understand clients and engage stakeholders so we can deliver on goals and against challenges. We believe that everyone has a voice in the development process, and we apply our unique perspective, top talent, experience, and expertise to make our clients’ visions become reality.

The Cedar Bog operators desired to create a building that had minimal impact on the unique, very special fen ecosystem. With the completion of a site master plan, design, and implementation, Triad brought the vision of a new, innovative learning center to Cedar Bog.
